I managed to find some detailed info about the lotus design from the Nordic Design Blog.
"Lovely items with the ‘Lotus’ pattern created by Grete Prytz, a second wife of infamous Norvegian Designer Arne Korsmo. Grete Prytz Kittelsen was born 1917 in Oslo, Norway. Her designs have won many prestigious awards. She was one of most influential designers in Scandinavia in Mid-Century. In 2003, when she was already 86, Grete visited China, where she saw traditional Chinese enamel factory still in operation and which inspired her to start designing again. Chang & Biƶrck got exclusive rights to reproduce some of her design, among which a bowl and a plate, that she designed using similar colors as her original 1950s works. Cathrineholm of Norway started enamel production in 1907." (Info found on Nordic Design Blog)
I've also just joined the rest of the Cathrineholm fanatics! I scored myself a green ice bucket and an avacado pot on Craigslist. I can't wait to find more!
Thanks for this article! I just recently discovered (or re-discovered) Catherineholm, and now I want to sell everything in my kitchen (except for my Russel Wright melmac) and just collect Catherineholm. We had the avocado mixing bowl set when I was growing up. My mom used them constantly, so they were pretty scratched up and she gave them away many years ago. Even despite the condition, I wish I still had them!
ReplyDeleteoooh oooh oooh, I have that exact teapot on the bottom right of the collage - and in avocado, too. We love it and use it every day! Thanks for the post - I knew it was a treasure but now it's great to know the designer. I'll show my family!
ReplyDeleteThanks for showing this, so lovely.
ReplyDeleteOh man! Thanks for that awesome lesson in design history:) I as well am totally obsessing over Catherineholm lotus dishware:)
ReplyDeleteMost of the time it's totally out of my price range, tho.
I'm sure I will get a good collection going by the time I retire:)
bring on the 50's!!!!
ReplyDeleteYay, enamel is king! It's funny but living in Sweden I never really bumped into Catherineholm... Guess the world isn't that small. But we do have a lot of Arabia Finel stuff though.
