I went to Trader Joe's the other day and picked up a small pot of purple Crocuses. I think they are my all-time favorite spring plant. I remember those were always the first plant to pop up in my mother's yard, sometimes when there were still spots of snow on the ground.
When I first bought my home back in 2008 I told myself not to bother with colorful flowers - too much work and too much money wasted. Well, I have now abandoned that idea and I'm thinking about daffodils, daylilies, and Irises. My mom has some flowers she wants to give me and I've seen many craigslist ads selling and trading plants. I can't wait for this snow to melt!

Is it weird to daydream about gardening?

Crocuses are one of my faves. They're sort of like a sign that says "Hang in there, this nasty winter is just about over". I've never planted any though--I always fart around and miss the fall "deadline" to get them in the ground. But I have heard, with basically all early spring bulbs, if you just keep them in a really cool place for a several weeks beforehand, you can still plant them. With the exception of the daffodils, you've picked spring planters, so you don't have to worry about that. I think you'll be very pleased when you get yours in. All the plants you're considering are low maintenance and pop up every year looking better and better. It's going to look fabulous! Good luck!

According to many of the quotes and sayings I've seen about January, this is time when people start do exactly that~dreaming of gardening.
We're doing it over here also. My son brought home a cabbage plant from school for a contest, so we are on our way.
NOT AT ALL! There are times when the snow is thick and grungy and the sun hasn't been out in days that perusing seed catalogs and dreaming of spring are the only things keeping me smiling. Snowdrops are my favorite spring flower. They're white and bloom even earlier than crocus. And do plant a garden. It doesn't have to be a total time suck and the cheeriness factor is well worth what time you do put in.
