Making your own brooch bouquet

On my online hunts for flower brooches, I keep seeing more and more brooch bouquets for sale. They go for around $350 and up and are great for brides that want that vintage look and a sweet memento to remember that special day. If you are feeling adventurous these are pretty easy to make ahead of time, but you will need to start collecting asap! Start hitting up thrift shops, flea markets even relatives. You will need anywhere from 50-90 pieces, depending how big you want it.

There are lots of sites that offer tutorials, some are better than others. I've seen people bundle them together with twisted wire or stick them into styrofoam forms for that rounded shape. www.fancypantsweddings.com had a nice step by step tutorial. Below are more yummy images for inspiration.

Wedding Invitations

I spent Friday and this morning putting together wedding invites for my friend Jennie's wedding. I had fun designing it for her because she likes many of the colors that I love and she adores the 40's and 50's era. Her theme is vintage elegance and her colors are sea foam green, peachy pink and soft yellow.

Interview:

Q: Why did you become a wedding planner?

A: I decided to go into the wedding planning business to turn creations into reality. I have always been a creative person even as a young girl. I started off with fashion, designing and choosing fun colors and unique shapes for my model sketches. I started to follow my dream of designing but I knew there was more out there for me. I enjoyed planning events for family and friends. Birthday parties became more creative and being able to turn small ideas into big events stayed with me. After going to Newbury College in Brookline, MA and pushing myself into the business and fashion I realized planning weddings and events was the industry I wanted to be in. I enjoy planning themed events and when planning a wedding I can get to use my fashion and costume history background.



Q: Do you have any advice for a bride to be?

A: Take a deep breathe and enjoy it all! It goes by so fast and you want to take it all in. So let me do the worrying while you relax.


Q: Where did your love for all things 50's-60's come from.

A: My first fashion silhouette came from the movie dirty dancing.. I was 10 years old. I love the way the dresses flowed and the effort taken when getting dressed up. I knew from that moment i would love that time. I started to educate myself with old movies like How To Mary A Millionaire, Breakfast at Tiffany's and Singing In The Rain. I would sketch out vintage elements like maybe the way the table looked, or the style of the telephones they used. Everything about that era from the 1950s to 1960s amazed me. There was more creativity and thinking behind everything. From the way they did their hair to the style of cigarette holders. I knew I was born in the wrong era!


Q: What are some of your current inspirations or things you love.

A: Martha Stewart. She is by far such an inspirational person and she has added alot more vintage colors to her palette. If I had to name one thing that inspires me about her take on wedding industry it is the way she puts stationary together. I am a subscriber to her Martha Stewart's Wedding magazine and I always look forward to her invitation section. Also her craft punchers are a must for any vintage inspired wedding.




Q: Does a girl need to break the bank to have a nice wedding?

A: Weddings can get very expensive but I can work with any bride to make it happen inexpensively. You don't need to spend alot to get alot, just using your creativity can go a long way. A great example is instead of a large cake that feeds 120 guests, minimize the cake. Using cupcakes can be a very cost effictive way. The Cupcake Boutique, located in Andover MA, is a great example of using creativity and style in an inexpensive way. They promote the use of cupcake tiers instead of wedding cakes. You can choose from a variety of cupcakes that will please your guests. You don't have to worry about large amounts of cake left behind. You can always add a stunning cake topper to your cupcake tower for that vintage touch.

Sorry for the lack of updates lately. I just don't have time to do anything anymore!

I was part of a wedding last weekend in Gloucester, MA. I hadn't been to the ocean in so long! It was a nice wedding, and for once this month it didn't rain (what a lucky bride!) It was a nautical-themed wedding. Check out the wedding invitations I made for them (if you haven't seen them already).

These cakes are so beautiful, almost to beautiful to eat! Chelsea, the creator of these designs, works for a company called Cupcakes in Vancouver. The top one is my favorite!

I've been working on wedding invites for a friend of mine and they are finally ready to get printed! She is getting married in Gloucester, MA so everything has a nautical theme. Now the fun part is cutting out 100 cards! Woohoo!

My friend/wedding planner found a cute gallery to do the ceremony and reception. I'm so excited! I'm working with a tiny budget but I hope to make something cool.

The colors of the wedding will be banana yellow and some light blues. I'm currently on a mission to find a vintage yellow wool coat (Boston gets really cold in January).

Center piece idea ~DIY~

I've had this idea of doing stick center pieces for a long time so I went outside today and collected a variety of dead twigs and weeds. Then I walked over to my local craft store and bought tons of pearls and white floral spray paint. I'm not sure if I will even go with this idea but I think it looks pretty so far...

Wedding

So it's official: I'm in the process of planning for my 5 year wedding anniversary. We never did a fancy wedding, it was a small affair with just close family and friends. So next year I'm going to make up for it with a winter "wedding" for my 5-year anniversary. I'm so excited! I will post a lot more wedding related topics and keep you all updated on all my plans.

Vintage Tuxedo Rentals

I was looking through Craigslist last night, when I came across a store that rents vintage tuxedos. They remind me of pictures I've seen of my uncle's wedding, where all the men wore baby blue tuxedo's similar to the one above... Hilarious!

1950's inspired wedding

My friend just started the process of planning her wedding, which is to take place in September of 2008. After attending many wedding expos with her and buying tons of wedding magazines, she has finally decided on a dress and color palette. Since I'm a graphic designer, my job is to design her wedding invitations and other printed items. I will write regular updates on our progress. This is so exciting!
