Something ate my fish :(

We have a really cool koi pond on the side of the house and since it got cold the fish disappeared. We just assumed the fish were hibernating in their small cave. Today, however, we had the guy who installed the pond for the previous owners come over and he told us they should still be visible, even this time of year. We can't get in the cave to see if they're still there because if they are we could shock them to death. The pond guy pretty much gave us no hope that they're just asleep, though, suggesting instead that a heron must have gotten them. The cave just isn't that big to fit all six of them without a tail or two poking out... My poor husband is all sad; he'd named them and everything.

I feel so bad for you. I have a Koi pond too and thank goodness, have never lost any fish to predators. We recently made our pond larger and deeper though just for this reason. You can probably increase the size of their hiding places pretty easy. I wish you much luck.

If it was an animal it'll be back because it knows where easy food is now. Get some more fish and install a couple outdoor webcams on and around the pond.

Hi Jenn,
just stumbled across your blog looking at some midcentury inspiration for my new space.. this story touched me as I have lost my favorite fish (yes, I name them too) My oldest (slowest)and my biggest and brightest (easy target). Had a big owl visiting in the middle of the night and I figured he would be hunting the mice.. good right? No, turns out they fish too. In the summer there is enough cover from the lillies, in the winter the fish slow down and cant swim as fast if at all so I dont mess around anymore. Get some deer netting and cover it up when the water gets colder. You can use pvc tubing to support it off the water surface a bit. They need sun and oxygen in the winter but they dont need beaks or racoons!

the neighbor said she saw a big owl looming over her fish. I'm sure that's what happened to my fish. The water level had gone down and poof 6 fish gone.
