Bamboo in cold climates

About 4 years ago when I was in house hunting mode, I came across architect Chaewon Kim that built these two funky homes in Cambridge, MA (pictured above). The houses were amazing, but we weren't to keen on the location. The one thing that amazed me even more was the bamboo plants growing against one of the homes (2:21). I remember the weather being really cold and they they were green and ALIVE! Ever since then I've wanted some bamboo of my own.

Recently on a wim I searched for a bamboo nursery and found a place called Greentop in Rockport, MA. They specialize is all kinds of bamboo plants, planter systems and design & consultation. All I can say is wow, I felt like I was in Disney World! It's by appointment only so please call before you go.

It was literally a maze. Greenhouse after greenhouse after greenhouse filled with plants. They had small running bamboo, enormously tall bamboo, anything you could imagine! All of their plants can handle New England weather apart from a few indoor plants. I bought a 10' tall indoor shade tolerant plant called Bambusa multiplex varigata and I also got a smaller lime green bamboo plant called Pleioblastus viridi-striatus, which I plan on growing outside. After seeing all that they had to offer, I would really like to get some larger outdoor plants, but I still need to come up with a plan. In warmer climates bamboo will grow fast but in a colder climate bamboo grows slower, so that is also something to think about when buying.

If you live nearby you should check this place out.

Vintage repurposed jewelry

Oh I just love these! I'm sure most of you all know about my love for vintage flower brooches, I even made a flick group for them.

I'm usually never keen on people "destroying/repurposing" vintage brooches, throwing 12 brooches on a chain is not for me. These on the other hand look so beautiful. I found these images in the designers flicker page.
There is also an Etsy shop! www.etsy.com/shop/beevintageredux

Cool Never Fades -- Hamilton Wood Type Museum

This museum provided inspiration and graphics for Vintage Varsity, Target's Fall Collection. Some of these design aren't available anywhere else in America, maybe even the world.

Loving the new clothing they have at Urban Outfitters. The two bottom tops haven't arrived in the online shop yet. These look like they will go fast!

Logs into Affordable Wall Art!

Saw this fun project over at www.curbly.com, looks so easy. I do love this project mostly because I have a thing for circles, ha. Even painting a few with different colors would look great too, and maybe using bigger logs. The possibilities are endless!

Landscape project

For the past few weeks I've been cutting down small trees, branches, grass clippings and I've been throwing them into a small ditch that was at the end of my driveway. Then I ordered 200 cubic yards of soil from a local construction company and had that dumped on top. My husband and I raked out that mound and now it's flat enough to do something fun, but what to do?

I bought a bunch of random bushes and plopped them down and it looked horrible, so I've decided to do a grid with two types of plants, the blue star juniper and the lemon thread false cypress. I really like these bushes but plans may change down the road. In the middle I want to make a house number display either out of wood, cement or maybe even metal. Cement is a pain, but will look so nice. First I'm going to make a dummy out of wood.

These designs below I really love (even though some are really mail boxes).

Polly Prissy Pants

So on a whim, I picked up this little lady 2 weeks ago. I think I got her because everyone around me is having kids. Babies are nice, but just not for me at the moment. I'd rather have a furry baby...

I call her Polly prissy pants or baby. We never really picked out a permanent name for her because we were still wondering if Floyd (the kitty king of the house) would warm up to her. He is to a certain extent, lots of hissing, but he is getting better. She loves following him and that drives him nutzo! More pictures to come!

Diy glowing orbs

I have some glass globes in my garage that have come off of old lamps or I've picked up at flea markets for nearly nothing. I was going to pour cement in them, but I know I'll never get around to it. For this project all you need to do is jam some christmas lights inside them and tada! You now have some really cool outdoor lighting.

Pioneering Industrial Designers Celebrated on New Forever Stamps

I just grabbed 2 sheets of these today. Love them, especially since they're forever stamps.

The U.S. Postal Service dedicated a new sheet of stamps honoring 12 of the nation’s most important and influential industrial designers. The Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum was the setting for the dedication.

The 12 designers who are honored on individual stamps include Peter Müller-Munk, Frederick Hurten Rhead, Raymond Loewy, Donald Deskey, Walter Dorwin Teague, Henry Dreyfuss, Norman Bel Geddes, Dave Chapman, Greta von Nessen, Eliot Noyes, Russel Wright and Gilbert Rohde.

“Encompassing everything from furniture and electric kitchen appliances to corporate office buildings and passenger trains, the work of these designers defined the look of modern America, and in doing, revolutionized the way we live and work,” said Dean Granholm, Postal Service vice president of Delivery and Post Office Operations, at today’s ceremony.

Joining Granholm to dedicate the stamps were Bill Moggridge, director, Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum; Ralph Caplan, design writer; Jessica Helfand and Sylvia Harris, Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee; Derry Noyes, art director; Margaret Bauer, art designer; and Stephen M. Kearney, executive director, Stamp Services.

Office progress

I've had tons of readers demanding what happened with my office... Well it's "done" but it never really felt finished. I'm always in there working and making a mess, so I didn't really have any amazing photo's to show you all. Here are some pictures I took last month at night. I've since changed some things around. I'll keep posting pictures, no matter how horrible I think they look. I love seeing other bloggers behind the scene pictures, I need to just suck it up and post, post post! lol
