I'm so mad I never learned to read or speak Polish

Exhibition: We Want to Be Modern
Polish Design 1955-1968: we want to be modern
The National Museum of Warsaw
04 February - 17 April, 2011

"This pioneering exhibition of approximately 180 objects from the collection of the national museum in warsaw, featuring the most important examples of polish design, rarely seen in the west, explores the significance of the objects of everyday use in shaping modernity and the modern polish identity emerging during the post-thaw period." More info and pictures at Designboom

Argh! I would love to go to this show!!

My mom came to the states from Poland when she was in her late teens with her parents. When I was young they spoke it around me all the time, and still do. I think it never stuck because my dad was born here and didn't understand a word. I can pick up on the gist of a conversation, but maybe If I went there on vacation and immersed myself... nah probably not.

West Elm outdoors

Seeing this outdoor furniture cheers me up after hearing about the snow i'll be getting tomorrow... Yuck!

Click here to check out West Elms new outdoor items.

The winning colors are...

I've decided to choose two color combinations instead of just one. These two were voted on the most, but actually the all green design officially won by one or two votes. I love the pink and green, I'm just not sure if these colors will match many rooms, but people seem to like the combo. I'm taking a chance on you people! lol

I'm getting these silk screened and sewn by a local company and I'm still in the process of getting the colors just right. I've seen a few color samples and they're just not there yet. I want these perfect!

ooo ahhh

Drooling over the new Ikea Stockholm lamp. At first I thought this was a small desk lamp, but it's described as a floor lamp, measuring 55" tall. I think this would be way cuter small, I guess I'd have to see this in person.
Comes in silver, black and white. $89

Office paint

Finished painting the walls and celling today, hooray! I also got my old hanging lamp up that used to be in my dinning room. It was originally pulled out of an old kitchen and sold on CL years ago. The lamp needs to be wired into the wall switch and even though it's not working yet, seeing it there makes me blissfully happy.

Next project window molding.

West Elm summer preview

I'm liking what I see! Check out more items here

- greek key duvet cover + shams
- wire cube lamp
- watercolor dots dessert plates

Painting

The plaster job in my office finished over the weekend so I've been painting the walls. I went with a light gray color because this room gets a bit dark, but the color is just dark enough to show contrast against the white celling, molding and my future white cabinets, which by the way should be ready in a few weeks.

Off to paint...

23 and me. DNA testing

My dad is really into researching our family history. He came across a DNA test called 23 and me that maps the heritage in your genes and even reveals health problems you may develop. Last week I opened the kit and I spit into the tube they provided. In 6-8 weeks I will know more about myself and my husband. This is kind of exciting, I can't wait for the results!

"With a simple saliva sample we'll help you gain insight into your traits, from baldness to muscle performance. Discover risk factors for 95 diseases. Know your predicted response to drugs, from blood thinners to coffee. And uncover your ancestral origins."

Hostas. Why I love them and why you should too.

Photographer Janet Loughrey

via

My mom has been growing hostas since I was little. She got a few plants from a neighbor and then she just kept dividing them, over, and over. She has given me about 20 and I bought a bunch of other varieties from Lowes on discount last fall. When I was younger I never really understood the fascination, but now with all the varieties out there who wouldn't want some in their yard!

These plants make great borders in semi shady areas and grow in zones 3-9. Hostas like rich and moist organic soils, and they like morning sun and afternoon shade. Hostas are heavy feeders and fertilizer should be applied in early spring and again in mid-summer.

Negatives: Watch out for deer. I have lots of deer wandering around my home and I have yet to have an incident, but I've alway read deer love eating hostas.

More office views

I found someone to plaster my walls and it should be done by the end of the week, hooray! The plaster guy said he'll even leave the scaffolding at my home for a bit so I can paint the walls. I'll also need it to install a hanging light in the middle of the room.

Can you see my new wire stool? I picked it up on CL for $70, the stool will eventually go with an island I plan on having made for the middle of the room.

Stuff for my office

I'm looking to add some simple art to my office, so made these black and white images. I want something that will pop out at you when entering. Once My office is close to being finished, I'll figure out which one I think looks better.

Also I bought this vintage wall lamp Sunday night, which I love. I can't wait until it gets here! Next I'm on the hunt for wall pockets for my files. I saw some that I liked at CB2, but the dimensions look off, like a file would fall in there and disapear. The Spectrum Wall Mount looks decent enough. Sadly there isn't much out there to pick from..
